Lay It On
In these artworks, I have explored layers of marks, shapes and colors in many variations. The patterns and textures made by the overlaid material and repeated actions intrigue me and feel true to my soul. Delving deeper, my art also contains layers of experience, meaning and time. It is my hope that these pieces will cause the viewer to consider how they were made and what it was like to make them.
day by day by daylily series:
These pieces were created formulaically. They each took one week to produce. Each day of the week, I added a layer of the written mantra, "day by day by day by"... until I filled the page. After that, I painted and blocked out one daylily to preserve the layer. There are 5 pieces in the series.
I thought it would be a pleasant experience to write "I love you" over and over to create a pool of them, but after a short while I began to feel like a teenager writing in her notebook, pining for a love. After writing "I love you" many, many more times, I was tired of feeling like a victim of unrequited love, but I needed to keep writing. I don't know how many more times I willed myself to write "I love you" but I was happy to feel able to stop.
Being at the Lake
The orientation of this artwork was horizontal when I started. I was intending to mimic the mountains that I saw reflected in the lake as I wrote / drew with the word "being"; but midway through making this with my "being", I decided that this new orientation was better. I liked how the lake and mountain became a boat-like shape that we can study from below as it passes above. It is true to the experience of being at the lake where the world falls away to leave me just quietly being.
